Having no inclination for the world

Hadrat Ibn Masood h reports that
Rasulullah g
slept on a grass mat and then stood up in a condition that the grass mat had
left an imprint on his back. Hadrat Ibn Masood h
said, “O messenger of Allah! If you had commanded us we would have spread out a
carpet for you. He said, “What have I got to do with the Dunya? The example of
the Dunya and me is like a rider that takes shelter under a tree and then
departs leaving the tree in its place.
Commentary:- There are
two explanations provided for the above narration in the Kitaab Mirqaat which is
a commentary of Mishkaat Sharif. If the letter ‘Maa’ is for negation then it
will mean that I have no inclination towards the world and nor does the Dunya
have any inclination towards me, that I should incline towards the Dunya and
gather material possession. If the letter “Maa” is used for posing a question
then the meaning of the Hadith will be, “On what basis must I love Dunya or the
Dunya should love me? I desire the Aakhirat, and the Dunya is like a co-wife
for the hereafter and a complete opposite to the hereafter.
