Problems in the path of Sulook

A problem experienced by one of Hadrat Hakim Saheb 's Mureeds and Hadrat’s response to it (with Hadrat Maulana Abdul Hamid Saheb’s (DB) explanation). (Many people experience similar problems in this day and age as well.)

Question:- O my spiritual mentor, today is the fourth day and my condition has deteriorated tremendously. This condition is getting worse on a daily basis. I have no control over my heart and eyes. The desire for sin is absolutely intense and my ability to restrain (from sin) has now failed. (So to say, the car is totally out of control. When the steering is turned in the right direction the car slides towards the left and vice versa.) This has resulted in the weakness of my spiritual condition.  I used to repent but keep breaking my Tauba. Currently, my heart doesn’t even incline towards repentance. It has become a burden to fulfil my Faraaidh. (Many of our friends experience a similar condition therefore we should pay particular attention to what is being discussed as in it is the answer for many of us.) Previously, if my gaze fell on a beardless young boy or a female then my gaze would be lowered. My gaze is not lowered any longer, or if I manage lowering my gaze then I keep pondering over that particular person for a lengthy duration. The desire of sin is so severe that I feel ashamed of explaining it. There cannot possibly exist a more humiliated person than myself in the world. (What makes the situation even worse is that a person is wearing the dressing of the pious outwardly yet he is involved in these actions. This is hypocrisy.) It is only you that can save me. (This is the relationship required with the Sheikh and this is called Aqeedat of the Sheikh.) Without your attention and kindness, my ship will not reach the shores. I am now remembering the sins committed in the past as well. (The sins committed as a young boy at high school and college are now being refreshed in the mind.) When I think of these sins my heart takes great pleasure and enjoyment. I have become so filthy that I am not even worthy of touching your blessed shoes. This is also your favour that I have the ability of explaining my condition to you. (How many of us don’t even discuss our problems but we want to sort them out ourselves. We have become Sheikhs and we regard ourselves as Buzurgs. There are also those Mureeds that don’t experience any problems as they are angels. They don’t even have to come to the surgery for treatment). Else, I would have been in deception for my entire life. (This is exactly what we do. We look into the mirror and regard ourselves as Buzurgs because of the Islamic dressing. Death approaches in such a manner that it is like smashing one’s car against a hard rock.) My Hadrat and Mentor, “You are the king of those that have recognised Allah Ta'ala. You are beloved, close and chosen of Allah Ta'ala. I beg of your kindness even though I am not worthy of it at all. ” (Many of us think that we are beyond such a condition, yet he feels that he is not even worthy of begging.) This is the hope that I have from you and you are a Sheikh-e-Kaamil.

Reply of Hadrat R.A:-

In Suluk, all people experience such a condition whereby they are overpowered with desire to be involved in evil and experience evil thoughts as well. (A Sheikh-e-Kaamil will never throw a person away any further. Hadrat Maulana Muhammad Umar Saheb Palanpuri Rahmatullah-e-Alayh once told me to recognise the level of people. He then said, “Give them a boost from their current level but do not throw them down.” For example, a person is only performing Jumuah Salaah. Now don’t call him a hypocrite, but compliment him on his performance of Jumuah, and then encourage him to perform an additional Salaah such as Maghrib Salaah. Then explain the virtues of the Fajr Salaah and the Noor of Allah Ta'ala that he will enjoy. Similarly, Hadrat explained to this person that he is not an angel but all treading the path of Sulook experience similar conditions even though one may have become a great Wali.) Therefore you shouldn’t worry about this condition and feel so low. (When you feel depressed then think that this is the cause for you to gain reward and reach Allah Ta'ala. You have now turned to your Sheikh. A non-Aarif becomes despondent and even contemplates suicide.)  This condition currently experienced by you should not be regarded as harmful and a sign of non acceptance. (When children are playing happily then the mother is content and doesn’t pay any particular attention to them. However, if any of the children start crying then the attention of the mother is directed towards him. Similarly, when one is lamenting over his spiritual condition then he draws the attention of Allah Jalla Jala Laho.) You should have courage and engross in Dua. You should perform Salaatul Haajat and whilst in Sajda cry excessively and beg of Allah Jalla Jala Laho to grant you Hidaayat (guidance) and Istiqaamat (steadfastness) and protection from all sins. (Look at how Hadrat had first put the sugar coating and now Hadrat is filling in the medication.) Insha’Allah you will cross this mountain pass (this storm and fire of lust). Do not become despondent ever of Allah Jalla Jala Laho. The sorrow that you are experiencing in your sins and the total annihilation and servitude that you are experiencing is superior to all forms of Ibaadaat and Taqwa that one boast of by many times.

a)      ناز تقوی سے بہتر نیاز رنڈي

b)     جاہ زاہد سے پھر اچھی ميری رسوائی

Better than the pride of taqwâ is the crying (in forgiveness) of the prostitute

Better than the pride of the one who abstains from dunyâ is my disgrace.

In the presence of Allah Ta'ala refer to yourself as the worst and keep begging of Allah Jalla Jala Laho to correct your current condition. You had explicitly described your condition with sincerity; this has caused my heart to become pleased very greatly. (This is a person that will really progress. On the other hand, a person that conceals his condition and outwardly behaves very pious doesn’t really progress.) I make Dua from my heart for you. These conditions are absolutely nothing. There are worse conditions than this as well. However, keep in mind that with courage and sacrifice one crosses the difficult paths of life and reaches Allah Jalla Jala Laho in a good condition. You should make a firm determination that you will be Allahs irrespective of the filthy thoughts that you experience. (Make a decision of shunning and trampling upon your desires and becoming Allahs. Many of us do not want a single thought to affect us throughout our lives. This will not happen. A person will certainly experience trials and tribulations.) You should understand the difference between evil thoughts and the intention to commit evil. (One is to be confronted with temptations whilst the other is to fall into sin.) An evil condition is when a person makes his evil thoughts an evil intention and then you even act upon this evil intention. (The thoughts of sinning are not a sin rather it is beneficial as it assists one in progressing.) If you do not act upon the evil thoughts that you are confronted with then this is regarded as Mujaahada. (In various parts of the Quraan, Allah Jalla Jala Laho has explained that these temptations are present within every person but one should contradict them. Our Sheikh Rahmatullah-e-Alayh says, “Do not make Dua unto Allah Jalla Jala Laho to remove these temptations. Without these temptations one cannot progress. If there isn’t petrol in your vehicle, how will it move? When petrol is available then ensure that you drive in a proper manner steering it properly. The desire of sin is not sin, but the firm intention of committing sin and acting upon that intention is sin.” When one has the desire but applies brakes (i.e. he refrains) then this is regarded as Mujaahada on which there is promise of reward and closeness of Allah Jalla Jala Laho. (These fine points cannot be acquired and understood without a Sheikh. If a person doesn’t ask anyone when involved in evil or he asks the wrong person as in the case mentioned above then one will destroy himself. How many people that were down and out in the gutters have changed their lives. There is a saying, “Many people realise that they need Islaah but they do not realise that someone is required to make the Islaah.” We say, “Give me time, I’ll come right.” Actually someone is required to correct you.) May Allah Jalla Jala Laho guide us Insha’Allah. Ameen!
