Displeasure of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam on seeing a building

أَمَا إِنَّ كُلَّ بِنَاءٍ وَبَالٌ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ إِلاَّ مَا لاَ إِلاَّ مَا لاَ

Hadrat Anas R.A says, “One day Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam  emerged and we had accompanied Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam . At a particular place he had seen a lofty building. (In a tone of displeasure) he said, ‘This building.’ The Sahaaba said, “This has been put up by a certain Ansaari person. Hearing this Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam  kept silent, and kept it a secret in his heart, until the erector of the building came by. He greeted Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam  with the greeting of Salaam. Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam  turned his face away from him (and this happened a several number of times), until this person sensed anger on the face of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam . He enquired the reason for the displeasure of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam . He complained to the Sahaaba, “By Allah! I find Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam  angry with me.” The Sahaaba R.A. replied, “Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam  came here and seeing your building, he was displeased.” He went towards the building and brought it to the ground. After some time, Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam  passed by the same place but did not find the building so he enquired, “What happened to the building?” The Sahaaba replied, “The one that erected it had complained to us of your displeasure, and we informed him of the reason for your displeasure, which caused him to bring it to the ground.” Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam  said, “Beware! There is a calamity upon every one that erects a building (i.e. it will get him involved in punishment), except that building from which he has no alternative (i.e. that he cannot live his life without it.)

To put a building with the sole intention of pride, and living a luxurious life, over and above one’s needs and necessities will be a means of destruction in the hereafter. The building referred to in this Hadith is a building that is over and above one’s needs. How could Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam like such an action which opposes one’s attaining high position in Deen. The buildings that are constructed for Masajid, Madrasah etc. do not fall in this category. (Mazaahir-e-Haqq)
